CBSE Class 10 total marks are 500 for the final percentage, even though a student taking six subjects will see marks out of 600 on the marksheet. How the Best of 5 Rule Actually Works

Step 1 — List all subjects and marks (out of 100 each):

Step 2 — Identify the lowest-scoring subject. Here, Mathematics at 58 is the lowest.

Step 3 — Drop it and keep the best five. The final five counted are IT (94), English (92), Science (90), Social Science (87), and Hindi (85).

Step 4 — Calculate the percentage.
Sum of best 5 = 94 + 92 + 90 + 87 + 85 = 448
Percentage = 448 ÷ 500 × 100 = 89.6%

Note what this means practically: Mathematics still appears on the marksheet with its 58, and Mathematics marks still matter enormously for stream selection into Class 11 (especially for Science and Commerce). The Best of 5 Rule affects your overall percentage, not which subjects colleges or schools will actually look at when deciding eligibility for specific streams. Is CBSE 10th Total Marks 500 or 600? Direct Answer

• If you take 5 subjects: total marks = 500. All five count toward your percentage.

• If you take 6 subjects (5 compulsory + 1 additional): your marksheet shows marks out of 600, but only your best 5 subjects — 500 marks — determine your final percentage and CGPA.

• English is always compulsory and always counts among the five used for calculation.

Each subject, regardless of which five are counted, typically carries 100 marks: 80 for the board theory exam and 20 for school-based internal assessment (periodic tests, portfolio, and subject enrichment activity).

CBSE Class 10 Passing Marks 2026 — What Changed

Every subject requires a minimum of 33% overall. Where this gets stricter for 2025–26 onward: you must also clear the theory paper and the internal assessment independently, not just in combination.

All three conditions must be met for every subject. Previously, a student who scored low in theory could sometimes still pass if internal marks pushed the combined total past 33%. That flexibility is gone for the current session — a weak theory score can no longer be "rescued" by strong internal marks.

What Happens If You Fail a Subject

• Fail 1–2 subjects: eligible for the Compartment/Phase 2 exam, typically held in June–July.

• Fail 3 or more subjects: not eligible for compartment; the student is required to repeat the full academic year (Essential Repeat).

• Grace marks: CBSE may award up to 1 grace mark if a student misses the 33% threshold by a very small margin — this is discretionary, not guaranteed.

For 2025–26, CBSE also introduced a two-phase exam structure for Class 10: Phase 1 (main exam) in February–March, and Phase 2 (improvement exam) in May. This gives students a formal, built-in opportunity to improve subject scores without waiting for the following year — different from the older single-attempt-plus-compartment model.

CGPA: How It's Calculated From the Best 5

CBSE also issues a CGPA alongside the percentage. It's calculated the same way — using grade points from your best five subjects.

Example: if your five counted subjects earn grade points of 9, 8, 10, 7, and 9:

CGPA = (9 + 8 + 10 + 7 + 9) ÷ 5 = 8.6

To convert CGPA to an approximate percentage: CGPA × 9.5.
