The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in offline, pen-and-paper mode, with 3 hours to attempt all 180 questions. Every question carries +4 marks if correct and −1 for a wrong answer — all questions are compulsory, with no optional or choice-based sections. A common misreading of the older exam format assumed marks were split evenly across all three subjects; they aren't. Biology alone is worth as much as Physics and Chemistry combined, which is why we tell students to protect their Biology hours first when a week gets tight.
Where the Syllabus Actually Comes From
The NEET UG syllabus isn't set by NTA — it's notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC), published on nmc.org.in, and drawn entirely from Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT textbooks. NMC has been explicit that students shouldn't prepare topics outside this notified list, and that over-preparation from extra reference material wastes time rather than adding safety margin.
In our own sessions, we still see students bring in coaching-institute modules that include chapters trimmed from the NCERT syllabus in the 2024 rationalisation. If a topic isn't in your current-year NCERT edition, treat that as a signal to skip it rather than "cover it just in case" — confirm against the notified NMC PDF for the exact year you're appearing in, since syllabus scope can shift slightly year to year.
Physics: Where Marks Are Won on Speed, Not Just Concept
Physics splits roughly evenly across Class 11 and Class 12 content. Class 11 leans toward mechanics and foundational laws; Class 12 leans toward electricity, magnetism, optics, and modern physics. Almost every Physics question at NEET is a calculation, not a definition — so the ceiling on your Physics score is usually set by how fast and how accurately you can execute a formula, not by how many extra topics you've read.

NCERT lines are used almost verbatim to frame Inorganic and Organic questions, so line-by-line reading matters more here than in any other subject. Physical Chemistry is where most of the numerical marks sit, and it rewards the same daily-practice habit as Physics.
Biology: Half the Paper, and the Subject Most Students Under-Revise
Biology is split into Botany and Zoology, both sourced entirely from NCERT. Because it's worth 50% of the total score, small revision gaps here cost more rank than gaps in any other subject.
